ALMA - a photo on Flickriver

ALMA

During the short time between completing grad school in Hawaii and moving to Washington DC for a new job, I spent two weeks wandering around Chile and Argentina. I was extremely fortunate to be granted access to visit the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), the premiere facility for submillimeter astronomy in the world. ALMA consists of 66 dishes, of which 35 (including the ones in this photo) are 12m in diameter. The array is located at an altitude of 5050m (16,600 ft), and I was given an supplemental oxygen tank when walking around to place my cameras. It's one of the most amazing landscapes I've ever visited.

This shot is a still frame from a 1000-frame rotary timelapse.The Large Magellanic Cloud, which I've only photographed once before, is above the dish in the center of the photo, and the first light of dawn illuminates the horizon on the left. The array is lit at night with bright green lights.
