Yosemite Firefall: A New Angle - a photo on Flickriver

I've wanted to shoot the Yosemite firefall from the valley rim for several years, but have always been foiled. I finally was successful. This required five days of snowshoeing, snow camping, and waiting for the right conditions. To my knowledge, these are the first non-snapshot publicly-posted photos of the firefall from the rim of Yosemite. I captured it on three nights.

Tens of thousands of people photograph the firefall from the valley floor each year. I photographed it there in 2011, and even then the crowds were too big for me. On the other hand, accessing the rim of the valley in the winter is quite difficult. Getting there involved a 10-hour 12-mile-one-way snowshoe that involved breaking trail during a sleet storm followed by four nights snow camping with temperatures in the teens Fahrenheit (-10 C). In addition to our backpacks, Raiatea and I dragged a sled filled with gear; together we had about 115 pounds (52 kg) of equipment.

I've been attempting this trip for a long time. It's become something of my White Whale. In 2020, there was no snow. In 2019, I flew to California, but an enormous blizzard closed the roads into Yosemite, and after sitting around outside the park I gave up and returned empty handed. In 2018 there was no snow. In 2017 I had scheduling issues.

I finally did it. More photos will be coming.
