Sunset over Eureka Dunes - a photo on Flickriver

In December, I did the off-trail hike up Sandy Peak following a winter snowstorm in order to photograph the views of Eureka Dunes and Death Valley. The hike was tougher than I anticipated, and I arrived later than I would have liked. I could see that an amazing sunset was forming, so I pushed myself as fast as I could go for the final ascent to the summit. The air temperature was in the 20s F and rapidly dropping, but I was dripping in sweat when I arrived. I shot this sunset with numb hands and a rapidly dropping core temperature, not even pausing to put on a jacket or gloves until it was over. Thousands of feet below me at the dunes, Kurt Lawson was also doing the headless chicken dance for this sunset. By the end I was very cold, and I ended up running in circles for 10 minutes to warm up before going to bed.

I threw my sleeping bag on one of the only snow-free dirt patches I could find and slept there without a tent. My brand new sleeping pad had a hole, so I had to reinflate it every two hours during the night. The temperature reached 17 F (-8 C) according to my thermometer. In the morning I watched the sunlight play on the dunes.
