Peering into the Milky Way - a photo on Flickriver

While browsing the Keck schedule, I noticed that for one night, a team of scientists from UCLA planned to use the adaptive optics lasers of both telescopes to observe the black hole at the center of the Milky Way. I was flying back to Hawaii from California that day, but I felt that I would be horribly negligent if I didn't attempt to head up the mountain and film it. Fighting jet lag, exhaustion, and altitude sickness, I spent the night shooting timelapse of the lasers and Milky Way. It was the single most productive night of photography I've ever had. This is a still frame from one of the resulting timelapse sequences--the final montage can be viewed here. This was shot on a borrowed Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 mounted (via an adapter) on a Canon 5D Mk. II.
