The Red Stair

            This is a photo from a random photo walk I did on lunch the other day. Taken in downtown Elmhurst, IL, I was out for kind of a trio of purposes.

The first was to do some testing of a new, old lens for the Z7. Since the camera has such a short flange depth, just about any lens imaginable is adaptable to it. This is a huge change from the F mount where almost nothing was adaptable to it. I thought it would be fun to add a classic Nikkor rangefinder lens to the camera (which also had the added benefit of being a beautifully small and light optic since rangefinder lenses are generally much more diminuitive than their SLR counterparts. I chose the Nikkor-H C 5cm f2. It's a Sonnar design with a nice close up feature. So far, I'm really liking the classic rendering it can produce.

Secondly, I just wanted to get out wandering with a camera since I haven't had time to do much of that recently. I enjoy my time behind the viewfinder or under the dark cloth. It was really nice just to be out wandering with the new camera and a classic lens.

Finally, I've been having a panic attack lately because I don't see compositions as well as I used to. I think this is related to the lack of practice lately. Just like anything else, one's creativity needs to be exercised continually in order to keep it sharp. On this particular outing, I was trying to find sort of non-standard compositions, relying on form, light, color and tone more than just subject matter. This was about as close as I got to succeeding. Not perfect but a lot better than I've been doing lately. So I'll take it.
