Aberdeen Art Gallery Designed in the neo-classical style by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, Aberdeen Art Gallery opened in 1885. It was extended in the 1920s with the addition of the Cowdray Hall concert venue, the interior Remembrance Hall and the exterior Cenotaph, all by the original architect. Aberdeen War Memorial. The War Memorial and Cowdray Hall is the City of Aberdeen's memorial to the fallen of both World Wars. Designed by Dr. A. Marshall Mackenzie and Son. The lion sculpture was designed by William MacMillan, A.R.A. It was sculpted in Kemnay granite by lead mason James Philip, assisted by George Cooper.
