AUNT AND UNCLE WITH NEPHEW 1950

            They would not let me pose with my pipe. They said it made them feel uncomfortable to have their photo taken with a lad who appeared to be smoking a pipe. (I had already decided to smoke a pipe and had started a collection. And, yes, of course, I must admit that I had enjoyed a few bowls of  Prince Albert with my friends in the back woods that ran behind the homes. My Grandad Hawthorne, not my real grandfather, lived only three houses north of our home and I spent much time with him as he whittled whistles sitting in the back yard smoking his pipe. I loved the smell of his pipe and told him I was going to start smoking a pipe whenever I could.  He grinned and told me I should probably not do that, but that I would have to make up my own mind. I started smoking my pipe, and enjoying it, when I turned twelve. My aunt and uncle were not happy, but they did not require me to stop. And it did not break their hearts either. At that time, there was much more freedom in America and less interference from legislation and bureaucratic people trying to tell us what to do and where to go.
