THIS IS GREEN'S BRIDGE OR GREENSBRIDGE [I ACCIDENTALLY IDENTIFIED IT AS JOHN'S BRIDGE BECAUSE OF A GHOST STORY]-234310

            In previous posts I identified this as St John's Bridge and I now suspect that old ghost story, often repeated by local tour guides, might explain my confusion.

The Factual Basis:

Bridge Construction: The current John's Bridge was  built in 1910, replacing an earlier structure.

The Great Flood of 1763: This devastating flood did occur, causing widespread damage in Kilkenny, including the collapse of Green's Bridge.

The Folklore:

Bridge Collapse: The account of John's Bridge collapsing due to overcrowding while people watched the debris from Green's Bridge is not supported by historical records. It's more likely that John's Bridge was damaged or destroyed by the same flood that took out Green's Bridge.
Ghostly Figures: The sightings of ghostly figures on or near the bridge are purely anecdotal and fall into the realm of folklore. There's no concrete evidence to support these claims.
The Confusion:

Bridge Identification: It's understandable that the story could lead to confusion between Green's Bridge and John's Bridge, especially if told in the context of a ghost tour. The dramatic nature of the flood and the collapse of Green's Bridge likely made it a more prominent story in local lore.

In conclusion: While the core of the story is based on a real historical event (the Great Flood of 1763), the specific details surrounding the collapse of John's Bridge and the subsequent ghost sightings are likely embellishments added over time.
