9.2-inch Mk. V BL gun, barbette mounting - carriage

            Originally mounted at Lavant Battery, this 9.2-inch breech loading gun was decomissioned in the 1950s after the disbandment of the British Coastal Artillery Regiments, and later dismantled and removed by the Royal Engineers in 1972 to be sold for scrap. Having lain in a scrapyard for 4 decades, the gun and mounting was reloacted in February 2022 to Europa Point where the intention is to restore and display it. Until this happens, it gives enthusiasts like myself a chance to see the individual components up close.

Details given in Chapter 18 of Coastal Artillery Training, Volume II detail the weight and quantity of the broken down Mk. V components:

- Gun, with bands and sliding bars; 31.4 tons
- Cradle with elevating arcs; 10.5 tons
- Gun shields, each half; 7.5 tons
- Side shields, each; 1.7 tons
- Side pit shields, each; 8 tons
- Front pit shields, each; 2.1 tons
- Rear pit shield; 1.7 tons
- Carriage; 13.4 tons
- Roller ring, with rollers and axles; 1.7 tons
- Pivot plug; 0.6 tons
- Pivot plate; 8.8 tons
- Pedestal, each half; 8.4 tons

It's also important to remember that when these guns were installed there was no machinery to help; lifting and shifting was done with block and tackle, and brute force. Right form the moment they were landed on shore from a ship to firing their first shot from the top of Gibraltar, manpower got them there.

The gun parts are now within ECO Park at Brewery Crusher in preparation for restoration and eventual display nearby.
