the iconographer writes:

"That icon  was painted last year and had many sources. The water was 100% from a Medieval illumination, the boat and apostles from two different illuminations, the sail, sun and rain cloud from my imagination. It took me a while to settle on the orange background and the yellow dots on the left but not on the right."

from a letter Nancy sent to the iconographer:

Dear Jack,

I am Jim Forest's wife. Jim has asked me to drop you a note to let you know how he is doing, and to thank you once again for the remarkable icon you sent of Christ calming the waters. We believe that icons know just where they want to go, and that's certainly the case with yours. On the day yours arrived, February 17, Jim was having a particularly tough time with pain in his lower back and upper legs. You can see it in his face in the photo I took of him holding the icon. That night he was admitted to the hospital, where he spent 19 days. They administered a series of tests, one of which was a spinal tap, and that revealed a serious infection. So they put him on IV antivirals and antibiotics, and slowly he began to recover. He still has a lot of issues and he's very weak, but you can see in his face and eyes that he feels much better. He came home on Monday, March 8.

It's absolutely astonishing that this particular icon should have arrived on that particular day. As Jim says, "It's hard to be an atheist."
