Breda - Passage Zuidpoort - a photo on Flickriver

            De Passage Zuidpoort ligt aan de Nieuwe Ginnekenstraat en staat symbool voor de grootstedelijke pretenties van Breda aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw. De winkelgalerij is een opvallend authentiek en gaaf architectonisch complex en de enige historische passages in Noord-Brabant. In 1933 maakte de bouwondernemer J. van Poppel plannen bekend om aan de Nieuwe Ginnekenstraat een winkelpassage aan te leggen. ‘Breda wereldstad’ kopte de Bredasche Courant. Men zag zich in Breda al verplaatst naar de wereldstad Parijs. Architect was Frans Mol. De natuursteen in de voorgevels werd verzorgd door de Bredase steenhouwerij J. Petit en de glas-in-loodramen in de winkelpuien zijn van de Bredase schildersonderneming Epso. De Passage werd geopend op zaterdag 6 juli 1935 door burgemeester Van Sonsbeeck. De muurschilderingen zijn van de hand van de Bredase kunstenaar Jan Strube. Aan de éne zijde schilderde hij drie meisjesfiguren in de kleding van die tijd (lange zwarte kousen en jurken tot op de knie) als allegorie op de welvaart die voortkomt uit harmonie en schoonheid. Op de andere muurschildering zien we het schip ‘Breda’s Welvaart’ door het Spanjaardsgat Breda binnenvaren, met links de burgerij en rechts de autoriteiten (waaronder rooms-katholieke geestelijken en militairen).
