Nonmarine intraclastic limestone (Monongahela Group, Upper Pennsylvanian; Route 7 roadcut north of Narrows Run, Belmont County, Ohio, USA) 1

This is an unusual example of a nonmarine limestone - it was deposited in an ancient lake (lacustrine limestone).  The small, light-colored, pellet-like objects (click on the photo once or twice to zoom in) are intraclasts - small limestone fragments eroded from elsewhere and deposited at this site, possibly by a storm or fluvial flooding event.  Fossils observed in nonmarine limestones at this site include ostracods, Anthracopupa land snails, spirorbiform microconchids, and vertebrate remains (fish teeth, fish bone fragments, fish coprolites).

Stratigraphy: float from the Benwood Limestone (or above?), Monongahela Group, Virgillian Series, upper Upper Pennsylvanian

Locality: Narrows Run North Outcrop - roadcut on the western side of Rt. 7, just north of east-flowing Narrows Run (a small tributary of the Ohio River), eastern York Township, southeastern Belmont County, eastern Ohio, USA (39° 54' 26.05" North, 80° 48' 36.50" West)
