The Corpus Christi sand carpet in La Orotava is a visual masterpiece created purely from sand, soil and flowers from the Mount Teide crater and is included in the Guinness Book of Records. The alfombristas (carpet makers) who create it are invited all over the world to exhibit their skills. Visit historic La Orotava, one of the most beautiful towns in the Canary Islands, on the day before Corpus Christi to avoid the crowds and get an up close and personal view of the alfombristas putting the finishing touches to the huge sand tapestry which usually depicts religious imagery but also contains a contemporary message. On the day of Corpus Christi itself, the cobbled streets of La Orotava’s old quarter are carpeted in vibrant floral displays as families create elaborate images from vividly coloured flower petals and grass seeds; a tradition which dates back to the 1800s The centrepiece and biggest ‘WOW’ factor is provided by the evocative sand tapestry in the plaza in front of the Town Hall. Head to one of the Town Hall’s balconies for the best views and a great photo opportunity. During the morning the narrow streets can be mobbed by thousands of visitors and progress along them can be painfully slow. The best time to visit is late afternoon when many visitors have gone and the flower carpets are complete. But don’t leave it too late. At around 9pm a procession leaves the town hall for the Iglesia de la Concepción, trampling the sand tapestry and the flower carpets on their way.
