Racing Centre Mowbray - a photo on Flickriver

On Cup day, the lawn area in front of the beautifully renovated old grandstand is filled with thousands of racegoers and punters. This is right in front of the winning post and so the cheers are loudest here.

Most horse racing at the Mowbray course is conducted at night, since the races are broadcast nationally on racing channels and to oversea's markets - particularly Hong Kong.

Although horse racing of some kind has been conducted here at Mowbray since 1826, the Launceston Cup has been run continuously since 1865 and its first winner was called "Panic" (great name!). Australia's most famous horse race is the Melbourne Cup, which was inaugurated in 1861, so Launceston has quite a bit of equine history here.
