Yours truly 'in action' - a photo on Flickriver

            Last weekend, the Royal Netherlands Navy had its open house day at their main base in Den Helder. I work for the defence academy and live about a kilometer from the base, but don't actually get to see their hardware very often, so I paid the port a visit together with friends of mine. I also ran into some of my students. This is a picture taken by one of them of me aboard HMS Lancaster (a British ship that was also in port for the occasion), looking very much out of place behind a Gatling gun. It's a good thing I'm a civilian!

The ship visible in the left of the picture is HNLMS Holland, an off-shore patrol vessel that only just entered service with the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ship in the background is Götheborg, a Swedish replica of an 18th century cargo ship.
