A Can Across Continents - a photo on Flickriver

            In the early 1990s, while I was still in school, I photographed a red Coca-Cola can lying in the sand near Lancelin, a small coastal town on the Indian Ocean, about 125 kilometers north of Perth in Western Australia. 

The area is known for its bright, sweeping dunes, where people race down the slopes on surfboards. 

It was a time before digital photography — the image was later enlarged, mounted, and labeled with a copyright and my name by our neighbours, who ran a professional photo lab.

More than three decades later, I found myself capturing a nearly identical scene on the beach at Norderney, one of Germany’s North Sea islands, shaped by wind, tide, and wide open sand.

Different place, different time, but somehow the same image. Some motifs return without being sought.
