Heiligen-Geist-Hospital, Lübeck/Germany

            The Heiligen-Geist-Hospital in Lübeck, one of the oldest social institutions in the world, is a masterpiece of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Founded in the late 13th century, it served as a hospital and almshouse, providing care for the sick and shelter for the poor.

Its striking façade, with slender towers and detailed brickwork, reflects Lübeck’s wealth and significance during the Hanseatic era. Located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lübeck’s Old Town, the building stands as a monument to the city’s history and charitable tradition.

Every year, the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital hosts what is, to me, the most beautiful Christmas market I have ever experienced.

Today, visitors can admire its architecture and experience a tangible link to centuries of social care, deeply rooted in Lübeck’s identity.

Despite its remarkable historical heritage, Lübeck faces significant financial challenges: by the end of 2023, the city’s debt stood at €1.1 billion, with a population of just 219,044.
