northern flicker - intergrade - a photo on Flickriver

            This male bird shows the red moustache of the red-shafted variety yet also has a red v on the nape a characteristic of the yellow-shafted variety. When he flew the undertail coverts were orange. The red-shafted is a bird of the west while the yellow-shafted is more common east of the rockies and in the north.
