Hemlock Woolly Adelgid - a photo on Flickriver

            Adelges tsugae, an exotic insect pest in eastern North America. Both the eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) and Carolina hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana) are susceptible. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence.
