Frontier Hazard - a photo on Flickriver

Frontier Hazard

            Marker along PA Route 287 near English Center, Lycoming County, memorializing Frederick Reinwald, a mid–nineteenth-century frontier physician. Whether a panther attack was responsible for his death is, however, uncertain.

Panthers (Puma concolor couguar or Puma concolor; also called mountain lions, pumas, cougars, and wildcats) have long been extirpated across most of eastern North America. Hunting (including paid bounties) and habitat destruction hastened their demise. Numerous topographic names in Pennsylvania feature panther (or the archaic painter), attesting to the cats' former abundance.
