Neverending Torii

            Erick walks up the torii-lined pathway at Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto, Japan.

Fushimi Inari is one of the most remarkable and peaceful places I've ever visited, and I could easily have spent many more hours there. The mountain path is lined with thousands of torii gates, with small shrines on the way toward to the main inner shrine.

Unfortunately it was raining pretty heavily and while Erick and I were eager to explore, the rest of the party were ready to call it quits after about an hour on the trail.

Inari is the Shinto god of rice, and patron of business. 

Torii are gates that symbolize the transition between the sacred and the profane and are often found outside of or within Shinto shrines. They are also a feature of many Japanese Buddhist shrines and temples.

Shrines to Inari often feature many torii, donated by successful local business people. Fushimi Inari is the main shrine to Inari in Japan.
