            Erick and Samantha try out a Chinese Lion mask in Hawaii's Plantation Village in Waipahu, Hawaii.

The village is fascinating, containing a variety of buildings that once housed Hawaiian plantation workers. The buildings and their furnishings represent the many cultures that melded in the Hawaiian plantations in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the houses also show how living conditions changed over the decades.

Our guide grew up on a plantation and helped give a much better sense of what life was like for the plantation workers.

It's not a glitzy destination, and away from the usual tourist areas, but the Plantation Village tells a vital part of Hawaii's history.

This shot was taken in a building that represented some of the earliest Chinese workers' dwellings. The hard, wooden bed with a wooden pillow was apparently a big step up from sleeping on the ground.
