Chicago Police leather jacket - a photo on Flickriver

CPD leather jacket for Patrol Officer ranks. The brass buttons say, Chicago City Police. When detectives wear leather jackets, this is also the style for that rank.

Leather jackets were authorized for Chicago officers in August 1965, to replace the fur-collared jackets. Officers had a year to transition to them and leather jackets became regulation attire in August 1966.

The pockets are for show only - they're not really pockets. There are numerous pockets inside the jacket as well as a strap for hanging a set of handcuffs.

Inside is a pocket which is ideal for hiding a gun - and ideal for pulling it out quickly, since this "pocket" opens sideways for a right-handed person.

This jacket is quite heavy for its size.

Both patches are vinyl which looks like leather. On another picture on this Flickr site, I have pictured the 3 different 8-sided vinyl shoulder patches and the vinyl flag patch which are worn on the CPD leather jackets. There are different 8-sided patches depending upon the rank.

I don't know when this style was used except it uses the current shoulder patch. This means it was after late 1981, when the 8-sided patches started to be used.

Still need one of these in my collection!

On this Flickr site, I have another CPD leather jacket pictured - it's well worn and has an old style shoulder patch used prior to November 1981, when CPD switched to the (still current) 8-sided shoulder patches. That jacket has sergeant's stripes, too.

If you see pics of Chicago Police leather jackets on the internet, if they don't have vinyl patches on both shoulders, then they are likely not duty-issued Chicago Police jackets. Some of these have 2 patches, but close inspection shows they are cloth patches rather than vinyl.

Also, some copy-cat Chicago Police leather jackets look very similar, but the brass snaps do not say Chicago City Police on them -- they may say just Police with a lower quality rendition of the Chicago city seal, or the snaps may have just the letter "P" -- these are not true CPD jackets. Also, duty-issue jackets do not have outside pockets that are real pockets-- some copycat jackets look like the real thing, but the sides of the fake front pockets open to reveal true pockets in which to place your hands. This is a nice feature, but true outside pockets are not on the real duty-issue jackets.
