Chicago Police leather shoulder patches

These 4 patches are leather for use on the leather jackets. Click on the pic for a better look, and you can see that these patches are not the typical cloth patches. The leather patches are generally harder to obtain than the usual cloth patches.

The top left patch is used by Police Officers and Detectives (when detectives are in uniform).

The top right patch is used by Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains.

The bottom left patch is used by Commanders and all higher ranks.

The city of Chicago flag patch is used on the right shoulder by all ranks, using this color scheme for all ranks. The meaning of the stars and stripes on the flag patch is explained in another Flickr site picture where I have 2 flag patches side by side, where one is leather and the other one is cloth.

The flag patch has been in use by the CPD since May 1, 1971.

The 8-sided patches have been in use since November 1981, when the CPD switched from the pie piece/teardrop shaped shoulder patches to these 8-sided patches. The 8-sided patches are still current.

The CPD uses cloth patches for use on shirts and nylon jackets, felt 8-sided patches for use on wool coats, and leather for use on leather jackets. For reasons unknown, while CPD has felt 8-sided shoulder patches for use on wool coats, the CPD does not use felt flag patches for the wool coats.

When you see leather jackets on the Internet that seem to be CPD jackets, note that many copycat leather jackets don’t have leather CPD patches on them. Instead, they often use the more readily available cloth patches.
