MARS LIGHTS Chicago Police and Fire - a photo on Flickriver

Here are 2 Mars lights - and something you don't see too often - a blue one and a red one, side by side.

Mars lights were used for many years by the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Fire Department, though not these particular Mars lights.

These are the Skybolt Beacon model SW-2.  If someone can tell us when these lights were manufactured, that would be great.

In Chicago, the police use blue lights and the fire department uses red lights.  This has been that way for many decades.

Chicago Fire Department trucks usually have some green light near the front, on the passenger side.  It's been that way for almost 100 years.  Sometimes it's a green light seen from the front, attached to the large outside mirror on the passenger side.  At other times, a green light is on the front of the truck, or there may be one on the top lightbar.  Always on the passenger side.

The colored domes pictured here (not counting the silver metal base) measure 4 inches high and 7 inches wide.  There are two lamps in each light.  I am happy to say that both work.
