En nuestro país desde la región de O’higgins (Cordillera de San Fernando) a la región de Magallanes (Islas al sur del canal Beagle).Habita bosques maduros de Nothofagus y Araucaria araucana
 DescripciónLargo: 36–48 cm.
El mayor carpintero en todo su rango de distribución.Marcado dimorfismo sexual. Macho levemente más grande, con cabeza notoriamente roja y cresta corta. Hembra con cabeza negra, base del pico roja y cresta larga y risada. Ambos sexos con cuerpo negro, pico alargado y fornido y coberteras blancas. Al vuelo, alas blancas por debajo.
