Red-bellied Woodpecker - Pic à ventre roux

            From my spring trip to Prince Edward County: the sound of the species calling in the woods is unmistakeable. But it also carries a great distance, and seems to be everywhere at once. Two or three times I charged ahead, thinking an encounter was unlikely, and it may have been high up. 

In a moment of wildlife grace the bird flew across me one morning, along on a trail in some dense woods. And I was able to see it clearly approaching its food cache. There were a lot of bushes and branches and positioning was tricky. But the bird was intent on its cache and I managed to be quiet enough to get a pretty great look, with minimal obstructions. 

I had to work with minimal light and dense woods, but the bird was working away and gave me time to get my photographic bearings. Once I got a few images in the bank, I was able to enjoy watching it work.
