Douglas C-47 in Flight - a photo on Flickriver

What's in a name?

With a few alterations, the Douglas C-47 was the military version of the popular DC-3 civilian airliner. The U.S. Army version of the C-47 was called the Skytrain, presumably because of its load-carrying capabilities. In British and Commonwealth service it went by the name "Dakota", based on the acronym "DACoTA" for Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft. The C-47 also earned the informal nickname "Gooney Bird" although the reason for the name is not clear. In U.S. naval service, it was referred to as the R4D.
