Black-Winged Stilt

Great to get a new species on the second day of the new year. Not the best of shots but good enough to help in identifying the bird and so added to my collection. The Black-winged Stilt is a widely distributed very long-legged wader in the avocet and stilt family. These birds pick up their food from sand or water. They mainly eat insects and crustaceans. The breeding habitat of these birds is marshes, shallow lakes and ponds. Some populations are migratory and move to the ocean coasts in winter; those in warmer regions are generally resident or short-range vagrants. This is an immature bird and as can be seen here as they are grey instead of black and have a markedly sandy hue on the wings.
