2008 Sunset Devils Fork State Park, Lake Jocassee, SC

            Sunset over Lake Jocassee, SC at Devils Fork State Park.  Lake Jocassee is 7,500 acres of deep water, and 75 miles of shoreline.
 Jocassee and its meaning “Place of the Lost One” comes from a Cherokee legend.  Jocassee was an Cherokee maiden and her father Chief Attakulla and his Oconee tribe, known as the “Brown Vipers,” lived on the west side of the Whitewater River.  A rival tribe the Eastatoees lived on the east and was called the “Green Birds”  One day a young Green Bird  warrior named Nagoochee entered the Brown Viper hunting grounds and fell and broke his leg.  Jocassee found Nagoochee and took him to her father’s lodge and nursed him back to health.  They fell in love and Nagoochee stayed with the Oconee tribe.  Later during a fight between the tribes, Cheochee (Jocassee’s Brother) killed Nagoochee, and returned from battle with Nagoochee’s head hanging from his belt.  Jocassee got into a canoe and slipped onto the water.  Legend claims as Jocassee gazed at the head of her lover, she stepped into the water but did not sink she walked across the water to meet the ghost of her lover Nagoochee
