2007 Sign at Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum, Greenville, SC

Joseph Jefferson Jackson, better known as “Shoeless Joe”, was born in Pickens County, SC July 16, 1888 Jackson’s baseball skills surfaced at the age of 13. Joe became a regular on the Brandon Mill baseball team where he swept the floors. The “Shoeless Joe” nickname came from during a textile baseball game against the Anderson Electricians in 1908, Joe was breaking in a new pair of cleats. His feet became blistered so he pulled off his shoes and played in his socks. During the game, he hit a triple and was coming into third, a fan from the other team shouted “Oh, you shoeless son of a gun” Scoop Latimer a writer for the Greenville News heard the comment and Joe was forever known as “Shoeless Joe”
