DB 8035 @ Viersen Helenabrunn - a photo on Flickriver

            Het werd ondertussen duidelijk dat de namiddag niet veel meer zou opleveren, dus vestigden we al onze hoop op de doortocht van de 186 291 van Lineas met een fraaie containertrein richting Genk — het liefst in het zonnetje, al leek dat steeds minder vanzelfsprekend.

Terwijl we wachtten, scheen de zon volop… maar uiteraard kwam er op dat moment geen enkele trein voorbij. Toen de zon zich weer achter de wolken verschool, verschenen de eerste reizigerstreinen. We drukten wel af — bij mij stond de camera voor het eerst die dag op een hoog statief — maar wisten meteen dat deze beelden weinig waard zouden zijn.

Stipt om 17 uur brak de zon opnieuw door. Het perfecte moment dus… als de containertrein zich tenminste liet zien. Helaas: geen spoor van de Lineas-loc. De zon verdween alweer en de volgende passerende treinen waren allemaal reizigersverkeer.

We vroegen ons contact om een update en vernamen dat de trein pas om 17u45 Duisburg Hochfeld Süd was gepasseerd. Het ging tergend traag vooruit — dit zou niets meer worden.

Gelukkig kregen we in tussentijd nog een omgeleide ICE richting Brussel voor de lens. Een bijzondere verschijning op deze plek! Digitaal heb ik [M] de opklaring trouwens een paar minuten vervroegd… en zo toch nog een speciaal plaatje kunnen maken.

By now, it was clear that the afternoon wouldn’t deliver much more, so we pinned all our hopes on the passage of Lineas 186 291 with a nice container train to Genk — preferably in sunlight, which was becoming increasingly rare.

While we waited, the sun was out in full force… but of course, not a single train passed. When the first passenger trains did appear, the sun had already disappeared behind the clouds. We still took some shots — for the first time that day, I even had the camera on a tall tripod — but we knew they wouldn’t be anything special.

At exactly 5 PM, the sun came back out. Perfect timing — if only the freight train would show up. But no luck. The sun vanished again, and all we got were more passenger services.

We checked in with our contact and learned the train had only just passed Duisburg Hochfeld Süd at 17:45. It was crawling along — clearly, this wasn’t going to work out.

Thankfully, we did catch a diverted ICE heading to Brussels in the meantime. A rare sight here! I [digitally] shifted the sunny gap forward a few minutes — and managed to salvage at least one special shot.
