Eurostar 4306 @ Bierghes - a photo on Flickriver

Sinds maandagochtend 1 september rijden de hogesnelheidstreinen tussen de Franse grens en Brussel opnieuw over het eerder voor werken gesloten gedeelte tussen Silly en Lembeek. Lijn 94 is daarmee weer een stukje meer in haar Doornroosjeslaap verzonken.

Ondanks de aanvankelijk sombere weersvoorspellingen – al waren er ook enkele opklaringen aangekondigd – trok ik er tijdens het laatste weekend van augustus toch nog eens op uit om wat omleidingen te fotograferen. Op mijn todolijstje stonden twee puntjes: eerst en vooral het uitzicht dat Wouter in Silly had kunnen vastleggen ter hoogte van de kruising met de N7, en daarnaast een (voor mij althans) nieuw standpunt in Bierghes dat ik via onze goede kameraad L2527.be had leren kennen. Best opmerkelijk eigenlijk dat een niet-streekkundige mij (en mijn broer, als ik hem meereken) op zo’n fraai fotopunt heeft gewezen.

Beide punten waren uitgesproken hoogstatiefpunten en dus vertrok ik op zaterdag – want dat zou zogezegd de betere dag van het weekend worden – om 9u10, gewapend met statief en fototoestel, eerst richting Silly aan de kruising met de N7. Het weer oogde een stuk grijzer dan voorspeld, maar toch slaagde de zon erin om zich af en toe een weg door de wolken te banen.

Toevallig viel één van die zonnige momenten samen met de passage van een dubbele TGV Réseau, onderweg van Strasbourg naar Brussel. Een twintigtal minuten later volgde de Eurostar uit Londen. Ik had stiekem gehoopt eindelijk eens een e300-stel voor de lens te krijgen, maar ook deze keer bleek het een e320. Tijdens deze hele reeks omleidingen is het me dus niet gelukt om het oudere materieel te fotograferen. Maar goed, mijn foto had ik beet. Na de Eurostar bleef ik nog even ter plaatse om wat bij te praten met L2527.be, die hier toevallig ook naartoe was gekomen om de laatste omleidingen vast te leggen.

Omdat ik sowieso nog naar Bierghes wilde, zette ik enkele minuten later mijn tocht verder. Na een wandeling langs een veldweg – waar het lijkt alsof alle buurtbewoners hun honden uitlaten (wie er al geweest is, begrijpt wat ik bedoel) – kwam ik uit op een open veld. Ook hier ging het hoogstatief de lucht in. Hoewel de wolken opnieuw de bovenhand leken te nemen, brak de zon precies op tijd door om een volgende Eurostar in het licht te zetten. Dit keer was het echter geen trein uit Londen, maar eentje uit Parijs.

Dit plekje aan de Rue Anne-Croix is er eentje om te onthouden, want je hebt hier echt een prachtig uitzicht op het glooiende landschap. Een decor dat de treinen die hier passeren nog net dat tikkeltje meer allure geeft – en waarmee deze laatste dag vol omleidingen een bijzonder geslaagde afsluiter werd.

Since Monday morning, 1 September, high-speed trains between the French border and Brussels are once again using the section between Silly and Lembeek, which had been closed for works. Line 94 has thus slipped a little further into its Sleeping Beauty slumber.

Despite rather gloomy weather forecasts – with only the prospect of some brief clear spells – I decided to head out on the last weekend of August to photograph a few more diversions. I had two spots on my to-do list: first of all, the view that Wouter had managed to capture in Silly at the crossing with the N7, and secondly, a new spot for me in Bierghes, which I discovered thanks to our good friend L2527.be. Quite remarkable, really, that someone not from the region pointed me (and my brother) towards such a fine photo location.

Both spots required the use of a high tripod, so on Saturday – supposedly the better day of the weekend – I set off at 9:10 with tripod and camera, first heading for Silly at the N7 crossing. The weather was a lot greyer than predicted, yet somehow the sun managed to break through the clouds every now and then.

As luck would have it, one of those sunny moments coincided with the passage of a double TGV Réseau, running from Strasbourg to Brussels. About twenty minutes later, a London–Brussels Eurostar passed by. I had secretly hoped to finally catch an e300 set, but once again it turned out to be an e320. In fact, throughout this whole period of diversions, I never managed to get the older Eurostar stock in front of my lens. Still, I had my picture. After the Eurostar I stayed for a short while to chat with L2527.be, who had also come here to capture the last diversions.

Since I wanted to continue to Bierghes anyway, I set off again a few minutes later. After a short walk along a country lane – which seems to be the favourite dog-walking route of all the locals (if you know, you know) – I arrived at an open field. Once again the tripod went up. Although the clouds were dominant again, the sun broke through just in time to light up another Eurostar. This time, however, it was not a train from London but one from Paris.

This spot along the Rue Anne-Croix is certainly one to remember, offering a wonderful view over the rolling landscape. A backdrop that makes the passing trains look even more impressive – and the perfect setting for this final day of diversions.
