VIAS VT 241 @ Mönchengladbach Rheindahlen

Tijdens onze oktoberuitstap werd er niet alleen in Nederland gehobbyd. Dankzij de nabijheid van de Duitse grens bij Venlo zijn korte zijsprongetjes naar onze oosterburen makkelijk te maken.
Mönchengladbach ligt bijvoorbeeld op amper een dik halfuur rijden van het Venlose bos, en zo trokken Wouter en ik — na het fotograferen van de Bustoshuttle — voor het eerst naar het Duitse deel van de IJzeren Rijn.

Deze historische spoorlijn verbindt sinds de 19e eeuw de haven van Antwerpen via België en Nederland met het Duitse Ruhrgebied. Het traject loopt onder meer via Roermond en Dalheim naar Mönchengladbach. Hoewel het Belgische deel nog in gebruik is, ligt het Nederlandse en Duitse gedeelte grotendeels stil sinds begin jaren 1990. Enkel het stuk tussen Mönchengladbach en Dalheim wordt vandaag nog bereden door regionale treinen.

We waren oorspronkelijk op pad voor een bijzonder transport van Siemens, onderweg van hun fabriek in Uerdingen naar de proefbaan in Wegberg-Wildenrath. Aanvankelijk leek het erop dat we dat transport gemist hadden, en dus hielden we ons eerst bezig met het fotograferen van de Regionalbahn-stellen die elk uur pendelen tussen Mönchengladbach Hbf en het vlak bij de grens gelegen Dalheim.

Eén van die treinen, een LINT-dieselstel van VIAS, passeert hier net voorbij een klassiek Duits Formsignal — een zeldzaam overblijfsel uit vroegere tijden. Het tafereel wordt omlijst door felgekleurde herfstbomen, een kronkelend zandpad langs het spoor en een rustige landelijke omgeving die perfect de charme van dit traject weerspiegelt.
En het transport? Dat liet uiteindelijk toch nog van zich horen…

During our October outing, our photography didn’t stay confined to the Netherlands.
Thanks to the close proximity of the German border near Venlo, short side trips across the border are easy to make.
Mönchengladbach, for example, lies barely half an hour from the Venlo woods — and so, after photographing the Bustoshuttle, Wouter and I headed for the first time to the German section of the Iron Rhine.

This historic railway line has linked the port of Antwerp with the Ruhr area in Germany since the 19th century, running via Roermond and Dalheim to Mönchengladbach.
While the Belgian part of the line remains in use, the Dutch and German sections have largely been out of service since the early 1990s — except for the stretch between Mönchengladbach and Dalheim, which is still served by regional trains.

We were originally on the lookout for a special Siemens transfer train, travelling from their Uerdingen factory to the test centre in Wegberg-Wildenrath.
At first, it seemed we might have missed it, so we turned our attention to the Regionalbahn units shuttling hourly between Mönchengladbach Hbf and the nearby border town of Dalheim.

One of those trains — a VIAS LINT diesel unit — passes here just beyond a classic German semaphore signal, a rare reminder of a bygone era.
Surrounded by autumn foliage, a winding trackside path, and peaceful countryside, the scene perfectly captures the nostalgic charm of this route.
And the Siemens train? Well… that’s a story for later.
