Pohutukawa in evening light - a photo on Flickriver

            The pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) is best known for its splendid show of firey red flowers, but the origins of its Maori name are probably more closely aligned to the masses of white buds that cover the tree before the flowers open which can be seen in this picture. Various authorities site references to mist and/or a white berried shrub in the Pacific Islands with the same Polynesian language roots. Other Maori legend, of course, does refer to the crimson red as the blood of a chiefly young man but these seem to be more about the blossoms rather than the name of the tree itself. Like many of these wonderful stories and ancient recollections, time has meant a lot of knowledge is lost or has been only partially retained, so probably no interpretation of the name today can be said to be fully representative of the thinking and experience of those first people who saw this magnificent tree so long ago. Different traditions from different iwi, too, add their own colour and interpretation.
