            About the pattern: The “Rumi”, one of the leading motifs of the Ottoman decorative arts has been a basic ornament not only in manuscripts, but in all branches of decorative arts: in tile work, clothing, wood carving etc. They developed especially in the hands of the Anatolian Seljuks who made ample use of them. 

Turks who lived on the steppes of central Asia had close links with animals. The animal figures in the central Anatolian tradition were stylized by the Seljuks in an original way and became a dominant ornament in all decorations.During this period, rumis were used in varied shapes and conceptions.

After the conversion of the Turks to Islam, the use of animal figures in their natural state becomes rare. In the 15th century, rumis were stylized, losing more and more of their animal appearence and becoming more ornamental.

Rumis served a dominant function in decoration with their structures fitted everywhere. Thus, the rumi continously renovated itself.

The Topkapı Palace (Turkish: Topkapı Sarayı or in Ottoman Turkish: طوپقپو سرايى) is a large palace in Istanbul, Turkey, that was the primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans for approximately 400 years (1465-1856) of their 624-year reign.

As well as a royal residence, the palace was a setting for state occasions and royal entertainments. It is now a major tourist attraction and contains important holy relics of the Muslim world including the Prophet Muhammed's cloak and sword. The Topkapı Palace is among the monuments contained within the Historic Areas of Istanbul which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, and is described in Criterion iv as the best example of palaces of the Ottoman period.
