NC&St.L #156 - a photo on Flickriver

NC&St.L #156

            In 1899, the NC&St.L RR decided that the consolidation style locomotive would be their mainline freight engine for the future. They placed orders with Brooks and Baldwin for nearly 100 2-8-0s by 1911. No. 156, however, was different. It was ordered from Baldwin in 1899 with a modified Wootten firebox in an attempt to burn cheaper, slack coal. The modified firebox accounts for the forward cab position. It was called a Mother Hubbard in Tennessee; not many camels in TN back then I guess. Anyway, #156 wasn't very successful and was converted to a standard consolidation in 1902. The modified boiler went to the Chattanooga Union Depot and served many years in the boiler room providing heat and hot water to the depot.

My version uses custom connecting rods and nothing on the model sticks out past 8 studs. If you click thru to the last picture in the set, you'll see that I did build a purist version, but I had always planned to make custom rods for this one. It is unpowered, but runs pretty well. It's a bit light right now, but that's easy to fix. The cab sides probably weren't brown, but I liked it the best out of the possible choices. So, 33 unique renders later, a new record for me, and there you have it.

I could find no pictures of #156 online to link to, but she shows up in most all books about the NC&St.L railway.
