The Large Cousin - _TNY_1326 - a photo on Flickriver

            At home I have a pet snapping turtle who has been with me since late 1996 which means it's fairly big these days (around 4kg / 9 lbs) but this guy which I found at the Prague Zoo is a couple of sizes larger.

This is an alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temminckii), a species that can reach sizes in excess of 100 kg.
 
The white smartphone in front of it here is my old Sony Xperia Z2 which I put there for scale (didn't think to bring a banana) and it s 147 mm (5.8") tall. Unfortunately, the tank it lived in was right at the entrance to the tropical animals section so the daylight  coming in and reflecting in the glass was unavoidable.

Unlike common snappers which are more active, alligator snappers prefer to ambush thieir prey and they have a cool device to help them. On top of the tounge, there is a small outgrowth which the turtle can fill with blood making it red and wiggle it like a small worm. They then stay still on the bottom with the mouth open like this and wiggle the "worm" until a fish comes along, decides to snack on the worm inside the "cave" and then it's just a matter of chomping those jaws together and lunch is served.
