Internet Detective Work - _TNY_6743 - a photo on Flickriver

On my latest visit to the Haga Ocean butterfly house, I noticed a couple of unusual-looking but cool chrysalides hanging in the chrysalis cabinet. Whith the twin tails like that, the assumption was easy to make that this was some kind of swallowtail, but when I asked the staff about them, no one could remember the name of the species.

The day after, I noticed a Reel on Instagram showing a mottled grey butterfly species I hadn't seen there before so I took a screenshot of the reel and fed it into Google Lens which promptly told me it was a variable cracker (Hamadryas feronia), also known as the blue cracker.

Next step was to google what the chrysalis of H feronia looked like and what do you know - they look just like this!

The reason they are known as "crackers" is that they are able to make a cracking sound using their wings which is used either for warding off other males or courting females - I'm not sure which.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get a shot of the adult butterfly soon, but I can offer a shot of a different cracker species which is much more blue than the blue cracker - so of course it is known as the red cracker (H. epinome): www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52160620043/
