California Tortoiseshell butterfly in an oak tree

            Here is a handsome California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica) butterfly on a leaf of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia, Fagaceae) in the woods today.  I usually see these butterflies on the ground, so I was surprised to find this one up in a tree.  It does have its proboscis out like it's puddling on the leaf - maybe harvesting the morning dew?  This butterfly is part of a group that overwinter as adults and come out on warm days like today, though this one seems especially gorgeous.  (San Marcos Pass, 25 February 2021) 

It was cooler today but still quite pleasant, in the mid-60s.  There was a breeze, but I wouldn't call it windy despite our NWS Wind Advisory which has now been extended until noon tomorrow.  The forecast is for wind all weekend.
