The following text is taken from a photo display explanation sited on the inland end of the quay.

THE CRANE
The crane and its framework had been brought from Europe, or more specifically, England. (Source: El Mercurio de Valparaiso Newspaper, February 4th, 1895).
“The materials for the operation of the quay, specifically the crane, had been commissioned to Europe, apparently to England. This has a cost known abroad as five thousand pounds sterling.”

Two years later, the crane was in operation. This brought progress and strength to Viña in its urban and industrial role. It also helped relieve the port of Valparaiso of some of its charcoal unloading activity.
“The buoys, sleepers and other elements necessary for its operation were already in place. The crane could unload up to 200 tons of charcoal directly onto the trucks, which would provide relief to Baron Station. After seeing the operating conditions, the government was interested in joining the quay to the central line, starting a branch behind the foundry of Lever, Murphy & Co. in Caleta Abarca, leading to the quay, and continuing straight to El Salto” (El Mercurio newspaper, Valparaiso, February 26th, 1895).

With this masterpiece, Valparaiso grew in territory and the identity of Viña Del Mar was strengthened as part of a larger scale urban unit.
