            Analyse détaillée d'un tableau réalisé en 1831 par le peintre irlandais James Duncan (1806-1881).

À l'avant plan, de grands champs en culture, meublés de quelques maisons de ferme, site du futur Mille Carré Doré (Golden Square Mile). Le secteur urbanisé, délimité par la rue Sherbrooke, apparaît ici bordé de beaux arbres. Au loin, l'ancienne ville en expansion avec ses faubourgs populaires. Le site du Champ de Mars est repérable par son agrément de Peupliers lombards. Au centre du tableau, un grand bâtiment, il s'agit de l'Hôpital Général dans sa première version, avant qu'on y ajoute une deuxième ailes dans sa partie Ouest, l'Hôpital Général fut construit vers 1823 sur rue Dorchester (boul. René-Lévesque) au coin de la rue Saint-Dominique au coeur de l'ancien Faubourg Saint-Laurent. Le panorama s'étend jusqu'au fleuve Saint-Laurent et au-delà, la rive Sud. Une partie de l'île Sainte-Hélène est visible à gauche.
