Metamorphosis

            During the rut a peak in testosterone triggers multiple changes in the physiology and behaviour of the stags. In the summer they hang out in bachelor groups, but triggered by the change in daylight and hormones they start to compete with one another and defend territories with roaring and clashing of antlers. The stags also develop thick neck muscles adapted for wielding those antlers and a thick neck mane.  

I think this image illustrates the 'hormone high' that stags experience during the rut - they go without sleeping or feeding to ensure they maintain their harem. This guy looked exhausted between bouts of bellowing and chasing rivals.
