ÖBB 1116 233-8 @ Lohner 🇩🇪 - a photo on Flickriver

Voor we op woensdag 6 augustus aan onze grote Bodensee-ronde begonnen, trok ik - zoals al gezegd - even naar Lohner om er een foto te maken van de dagelijkse Railjet tussen Frankfurt (Main) Hbf en (die week voor de gelegenheid wegens werken in Oostenrijk) Wörgl. De trein volgt echt wel een toeristische route want rijdt vanuit Frankfurt (Main) via Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Ulm, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Bregenz, de Arlberg en Innsbruck naar Wörgl.

Door de werken in Oostenrijk was de stam die week ook nog een keertje gedraaid (info met dank aan de DB-app) en op de Lokfinder van de ÖBB had ik ook gezien dat de Werbelok 'Lebensgefühl Österreich - Mit der Bahn in den Winter' de Railjet zou trekken dan wel duwen. Dat waren dus meer dan redenen genoeg om in Lohner te profiteren van de gesluierde zon en even een alternatief zicht op te zoeken om de trein van achteren uit op de gevoelige chip te leggen.

Later op de week kwam ik dan wel van een lokale spotter te weten dat deze trein vanaf december 2025 niet meer zal rijden. De ÖBB heeft sinds de opening van de Koralmtunnel (tussen Graz en Klagenfurt) namelijk te weinig Railjet-stammen voor alle binnenlandse diensten... Wat was ik dus wel blij dat ik toch even tijd maakte voor deze exoot op de 'Südbahn' (en wie weet volgde er wel nog een foto later...?)

Oh ja, in de verte groeten trouwens de Appenzeller Alpen (Zwitserland) met de Säntis als hoogste bergtop. En zo zien jullie hier dus een Oostenrijkse trein in de buurt van de Bodensee in Duitsland met op de achtergrond Zwitserse Alpen. Lekker internationaal dus!

Before we started our big Lake Constance tour on Wednesday, August 6th, I went to Lohner – as I mentioned – to take a picture of the daily Railjet between Frankfurt (Main) Hbf and (that week, due to work in Austria), Wörgl. The train definitely follows a scenic route, running from Frankfurt (Main) via Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Ulm, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Bregenz, the Arlberg, and Innsbruck to Wörgl.

Because of the infrastructure works in Austria, the train had also been rotated once that week (info courtesy of the DB app), and on the ÖBB's Lokfinder, I'd also seen that the "Lebensgefühl Österreich - Mit der Bahn in den Winter" (Austria Life Feeling - With the Railway in Winter) would pull or push the Railjet. So, that was more than enough reason to take advantage of the veiled sun in Lohner and seek out an alternative viewpoint to capture the train from behind.

Later that week, I learned from a local spotter that this train will no longer run from December 2025. Since the opening of the Koralm Tunnel (between Graz and Klagenfurt), the ÖBB has too few Railjet trainsets for all domestic services... So I was so glad I made time for this exotic train on the 'Südbahn' (and who knows, maybe a photo would follow...?)

Oh yes, in the distance, the Appenzell Alps (Switzerland) greet you, with the Säntis as the highest peak. And so you see an Austrian train near Lake Constance in Germany with the Swiss Alps in the background! Can it be more international?!
