Torre delle ciaule

            When the Sicilian coasts were besieged by pirates who came from Tripoli. Algiers or Tunis, between 1535 and 1543 the viceroy Ferrante Gonzaga had a long chain of coastal towers built and put into operation, located in strategic positions such that, once the enemy was sighted, they were able to warn each other other with already predefined signals and clearly visible from a distance: fires by night, big smokes by day!

Among the towers used for this defensive purpose we find the Gliaca tower, called delle Ciavole or Ciaule, perhaps the most beautiful of the Sicilian coastal towers both for its state of conservation and for the spectacular naturalistic context.

Located in Gliaca di Piraino, in the province of Messina, it was built with large blocks of stone on a rocky spur. Inside there is still the bell that was used to raise the alarm to the inhabitants of the village below.
This singular construction takes its name from the various species of birds that, at present, populate it and that have made their residence in it and in its abandonment.
It is said that the beautiful princess Maria La Bella, daughter of Francesco I often looked out on the balcony of the Castle of Brolo to greet her lover who arrived in a small boat to the port. The passion of the two suitors, hampered by their families, had prompted them to concoct the elopement.
But, spied on and discovered, they were imprisoned in the Torre delle Ciavole cistern and it is rumored that they were even buried alive! And, from that cistern, in memory of the atrocity suffered, their lamentations rise to the sky which, in the popular imagination, made into legend, are identified with the voices of the "ciavole" who populate and preside over the beautiful sighting tower today.

Quando le coste siciliane erano prese d’assedio da parte dei pirati che provenivano da Tripoli.  Algeri o Tunisi, tra il 1535 e il 1543 il viceré Ferrante Gonzaga fece costruire e mettere in funzione una lunga catena di torri costiere, situate in posizioni strategiche tali che, una volta avvistato il nemico, fossero in condizione di avvisarsi l’un l’altro con segnali già predefiniti e ben visibili a distanza: fuochi di notte, grandi fumate di giorno! 

Tra le torri adibite a questo scopo difensivo troviamo la torre Gliaca, detta delle Ciavole o Ciaule, forse la più bella fra le torri costiere siciliane sia per lo stato di conservazione che per lo spettacolare contesto naturalistico 

Sita a Gliaca di Piraino , nella provincia di Messina, è stata costruita con grossi blocchi di pietra su uno sperone roccioso  All’interno si trova ancora la campana che serviva a lanciare l’allarme agli abitanti del borgo sottostante. 

Questa singolare costruzione prende il nome dalle varie specie di uccelli che, allo stato attuale, la popolano e che hanno fatto in essa e nel suo abbandono, la loro residenza. 

Si narra che la bellissima principessa Maria La Bella, figlia di Francesco I si affacciasse spesso al balcone del Castello di Brolo per salutare l’innamorato che arrivava con una barchetta fino al porto. La passione dei due spasimanti, ostacolata dalle loro famiglie, li aveva spinti ad architettare la fuga d’amore.
Ma, spiati e scoperti, furono imprigionati nella cisterna della Torre delle Ciavole e si vocifera, anche sepolti vivi ! E, da quella cisterna, a memoria dell’atrocità subita, si alzano al cielo i loro lamenti che, nella fantasia popolare, fatta leggenda, si identificano con le voci delle “ciavole” che popolano e presidiano oggi la bellissima Torre degli avvistamenti.
