… so Grandpa served with the Indian Army in the Labour Corp, presumably managing teams of Indian workers because he could speak (enough of) the language … the Labour Corp were urgently dispatched to France and Belgium in autumn 1914. By December 1915, amid rumours that they had been "broken" by shellfire, the Indian infantry divisions were shifted to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq, including the head of the Persian Gulf, southeast Turkey, west Iran, northeastern Syria and northern Kuwait). This rings true because there a photographs taken by Jack of railways in Persia. Presumably his team were involved in railway construction …
