Sunrise on the Ridgeline - a photo on Flickriver

            The southeast end of the Ko’olau mountain range lacks the typical orographic cloud cap on this morning.  The ridgeline is referred to as a range, but is actually the inland rim of the Ko’olau volcano.  The seaward side of the volcano slipped into the Pacific Ocean about 1.8 million years ago in one of the largest known landslides on earth.  The remainder of the Ko’olau shield volcano has been deeply dissected by erosion and covered in tropical rain forest.  The tall peak right of center is Awawaloa, commonly known locally as Mount Olympus.  The taller two peaks to the left are Kōnāhuanui, commonly known as K1-North Peak 3150’ and K2-South peak 3105’.  Kōnāhuanui translates to large testicles, referring to an obscure mythology of a giant inhabitant.
