Mexico City - Museo Soumaya Under Construction / GM Under Destruction / Ford Survived until 2000 (2010)

            In front is a former junction of the former Ferrocarril Cuernavaca which had a branch leading into the former GM Antara facility, which was located at right. The left branch along Presa Falcon led to other industrial sites, now redeveloped or under redevelopment. All that is left of GM is the "Magnetic Attraction" billboard and an office tower. 

In the middle distance is the then under-construction Museo Soumaya. In the background is a partially completed retail/office complex, including the future home of Telcel, owned by Carlos Slim, the "worlds richest man" and the museum's benefactor.

The tracks of the Ferrocarril Cuernavaca, which once continued another 100 miles to the south, end a few hundred feet out of the view to the left. At the time of the photo they still continued to join Ferrocarril Industrial to the northeast. Plans have been announced to convert the right-of-way into a linear park along this stretch.

Until 2000, Ford still operated an auto assembly plant a few miles to the northeast at Avenida Henry Ford and Ferrocarril Hidalgo, near the Basilica of Guadalupe. The tracks of Ferrocarril Cuernavaca and Ferrocarril Hidalgo were (and may still be) connected by an indirect route.

Added March 2014: the tracks are still in use  and some progress has been made on the "linear park" alongside. The red building under the GM sign was demolished by 2013; a museum is under construction on the site.
