Unfortunately, FOTAS (Friends of the Animal Shelter), the nonprofit organization caring for the animals waiting for adoption, is being dismantled by the Oregon Jackson County Administration.
One would think the County would assess the replacement cost of the services provided by FOTAS 250 volunteers--fundraising, medical assistance, transportation, donations, low cost vaccinations, low cost micro-chipping, street-dog outreach, animal fostering, and community engagement--before it creates for itself a budgetary headache.
After implementing a preliminary series of ill-advised management adjustments since last summer, the Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS) finds itself in the unenviable position of not meeting the animals' needs, which is against the law in Oregon.
In the middle of this incomprehensible management mess are the hundreds of dogs, cats and other animals passing through the JCAS every year, and, as usual, they are the one paying the price of human frailty.
The shelter lost its No-Kill status after being unable to meet the 90% release rate threshold.
