27001 and 26024, Bo’ness - a photo on Flickriver

            27001 leads 26024 out of Bo'ness during the July 2012 Diesel Gala

New as D5347 27001 was allocated to Thornton Depot in Fife for mixed traffic duties. Tranferred to Eastfield Depot to replace unreliable Claytons and NBL locos the 27's became closely associated with the West Highland Line until withdrawal during the 1980's/ 27001 lasted until July 1987 still based at Eastfield. It is now preserved at the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway along with 27005 (D5351).

26024 is part of an earlier but similar batch of locomotives also built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co in 1958/59. They had a slightly less powerful 1,160hp Sulzer 6LDA28 engine than the subsequent Class 27's. The first batch of locomotives (D5300 - D5319) were allocated to Hornsey Depot in London but the remaining 27 (D5320 - D5346) went straight to Scottish Region and Haymarket Depot. They were joined by the Eastern Region examples during 1960. Class 26's operated throughout Scotland on both passenger and freight services are particularly associated with the Inverness Depot and their operation on Far North Line services until the early 1980's after which they were primarily associated with freight services but remained regular features of passenger services on the Fife Circle. 26024 lasted until 9 October 1992 when it failed on a ballast trip near Rutherglen and was withdrawn along with 26002, 26014 and 26042.
Now preserved along with 26004 by the 6LDA Group it is based at the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway.
